Lira Kennedy's despatches Nos. 27, 29, and 33.
Mr. 27 reports that the Governor had visited two Peruvian ships fitting in the harbour for the conveyance of Coolies from Macao. One was of 1400 tons and was intended to carry about 1300 Emigrants; the other was said to have carried 780 Chinese on her last voyage to Callao.
The area of the between decks of these ships is not stated, but the smaller of the two must have been excessively crowded with 780 Chinese besides her crew and a few others.
The statements of the people showed that the Chinese are treated with much cruelty on the voyage, but the Governor had no power till the proposed Ordinance on the subject is passed, to interfere.
